Brief interventions are, genuinely, one of the most powerful tools in modern healthcare. Accessible, effective, well-utilised, and — when it's working — deeply satisfying for both clinician and patient. But let's be honest about the other side of that coin.

The pace is relentless. The pressure is constant — good numbers, high uptake, low DNAs, strong outcomes. The scale is big, and the definition of "brief" is anyone's guess — one session? Ten? And somewhere in the middle of all of that, the person providing the treatment quietly starts to unravel.

We burn out faster. We feel it before we name it. We watch our colleagues — brilliant, committed, experienced people — hit the wall and walk away. And sometimes we wonder: what's my shelf life here?

I've had 2.5 episodes of burnout myself. I've worked in brief interventions my entire career — from internship to now, 10 years on, oh, and I was the first HIP in New Zealand. So when I say I've made it my mission to understand how we stay in this mahi for the long haul — AND have a sick life, why would we work so hard and accept anything less?

I reckon there is a way forward. I believe you can build a long, sustainable, satisfying — even joyous — career in brief intervention. And I reckon I can teach you how.
